Adenau is a town in the High Eifel region of Germany. It is sometimes called Johanniterstadt because a group called the Order of Saint John had their base there long ago, during the Middle Ages. The town's symbol shows a black cross from the Electorate of Cologne and a lion from the lords of Nürburg.

A part of Adenau named Breidscheid was its own village until 1952. People have lived there since at least the 1200s. The small chapel in Breidscheid was built in 1630.

Just outside Adenau is part of the famous Nürburgring race track, which is known for its exciting car races.

History

Adenau was first mentioned in the year 992 and was called Adenova. In 1162, a leader named Ulrich gave his home to the Order of Malta. This made Adenau an important place for helping poor people and travelers.

Later, in 1816, Adenau became its own special area. In 1927, a famous race track called the Nürburgring opened there. In 1932, Adenau joined together with another area called the district of Ahrweiler.
