Alkaid

Alkaid, also called Eta Ursae Majoris, is a bright star in the constellation of Ursa Major. It is the easternmost star in the Big Dipper, also known as the Plough, an asterism made up of several stars. Unlike most stars in the Big Dipper, Alkaid does not belong to a group of stars called the Ursa Major moving group.

With an apparent visual magnitude of +1.86, Alkaid is the third-brightest star in the constellation Ursa Major and one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It shines clearly and can often be seen on clear nights away from bright city lights. This makes it an important landmark for star watchers and helps people find their way when looking up at the stars.

Physical properties

Alkaid is a bright blue-white star. It is much larger and hotter than our Sun. Alkaid is about six million years old and spins very fast, which makes it a little flattened. Scientists use Alkaid to help study other stars because its light does not change much.

So far, no planets or extra stars have been found around Alkaid.

Nomenclature

η Ursae Majoris (also called Eta Ursae Majoris) is the official name chosen by the International Astronomical Union for this star, but many cultures have different names for it.

The traditional name Alkaid comes from an Arabic phrase meaning "The leader of the daughters of the bier". In this phrase, the "daughters of the bier" are three stars in the handle of the Big Dipper: Alkaid, Mizar, and Alioth. In Chinese, the star is called Běidǒuqī ("the Seventh Star of the Northern Dipper") or Yáoguāng ("the Star of Twinkling Brilliance").

In culture

The star Alkaid gave its name to a ship called the USS Alkaid (AK-114) in the United States Navy. This ship was a Crater class cargo ship.

Alkaid is one of the special stars called Behenian fixed stars that people used in old practices like Alchemy. There is a fossil starfish named Alkaidia after this star.
