Apalachicola Bay

Apalachicola Bay is an estuary and lagoon on the northwest coast of the U.S. state of Florida. It includes St. George Sound, St. Vincent Sound, and East Bay, covering about 208 square miles (540 km2). Four islands—St. Vincent Island, Cape St. George Island, St. George Island, and Dog Island—separate the bay from the Gulf of Mexico. Water moves in and out through several passes and channels.

The bay is very important for nature and has been named a National Estuarine Research Reserve. The largest source of fresh water to the bay is the Apalachicola River. Together with the Chattahoochee River, Flint River, and Ochlockonee River, it drains a huge area of over 20,000 square miles (52,000 km2), sending in a lot of water every second.

Biodiversity

Apalachicola Bay is part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. This special place has many kinds of plants, animals, and fish. There are 1,162 kinds of plants, including the biggest natural group of tupelo trees in the world. You can also find 308 different birds, 186 types of fish, and 57 kinds of mammals there. It has more amphibians and reptiles than anywhere else in North America north of Mexico.

Some animals in Apalachicola Bay need extra care. These include the Gulf Sturgeon, the Fat threeridge mussel, the Purple bankclimber mussel, and the Chipola slabshell mussel. Changes in water flow can make it hard for these mussels to survive. Drought can also cause worries for these special mussels.

Apalachicola Bay is home to most of Florida’s oysters. These oysters are important for the environment and the state’s economy. Oysters need the right water flow, salt levels, temperature, and food to grow well. In 2012, the number of oysters in Apalachicola Bay dropped a lot. This became a big problem for fishing in 2013. In Franklin County, the oyster population went down a lot. To help the oysters come back, fishing for them was stopped for five years. Scientists are still studying why the oysters were affected by changes in the water and other animals.

Apalachicola Bay is part of a big disagreement between the states of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. This issue is called the Tri-State Water Wars and it involves the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin. It started during a dry spell in 2007 when there wasn’t enough water in federal reservoirs. The three states argue about how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers should manage water flow, especially from Lake Lanier. The Corps controls how much water flows into the Apalachicola River, which is important for the Apalachicola Bay and its oyster industry. Sometimes, during very dry periods, the Corps allows less water to flow into the Apalachicola River. Enough water flow is needed to help protect plants and animals that are important and listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Climate change and variability

The weather in the Apalachicola Bay area can change a lot because of global climate patterns. For example, during El Niño, the Flint River has more water, but during La Niña, it has less. This can lead to droughts.

Florida has seen less rain and hotter temperatures from 1970 to 2009, and scientists think temperatures could rise more if there is more carbon dioxide in the air.

Extreme weather events, which are becoming more common because of climate change, can affect the Apalachicola Bay. These events can change how much water flows into the bay and how much dirt and sand is carried there. This can impact the plants and animals in the bay.
