History
The town of Bad Karlshafen began in 1699 when French Huguenots came looking for a safe place to live after trouble in France. They first called the town Sieburg, then named it after Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, who helped them find safety. The town has a museum about the Huguenots with pictures, books, and family stories.
Charles I had big plans for the town, like building new waterways to help trade. Though not all plans were finished, parts of the town were built in a beautiful baroque style. The town was later renamed Carlshaven.
Many people from the Piedmont Valleys in Savoy-Piedmont-Sardinia also came to live there. Since 1977, Karlshafen has been known as a spa town and earned the title 'Bad'.
