Format

Twelve teams were split into two groups of six teams each for the basketball event at the 2000 Summer Olympics. The top four teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage. Teams that finished fifth and sixth in their groups played extra matches to decide ninth and eleventh places.

In the quarterfinals, the first-place team from one group played the fourth-place team from the other group, and so on. Teams that lost in certain quarterfinal matches played for fifth and sixth places. The winners of the quarterfinals met in the semifinals, and the semifinal winners competed for the gold medal, while the losers played for the bronze. If teams were tied, they used head-to-head results and goal averages to decide the ranking.
