Tourbillon Castle

French: Château de Tourbillon

Tourbillon Castle is a castle in Sion in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It sits on a hill and looks toward the Basilique de Valère, which is on the opposite hill.

The castle was built at the end of the 13th century under the direction of Bishop Boniface de Challant. It was made to protect the area and served as a home for the bishops of Sion. Over time, the castle faced many difficulties, including fights between the bishops and the people of Valais. It was badly damaged in 1417 during the Raron affair, a disagreement between the people of Sion and the Raron family. It was rebuilt a few decades later by Bishop William III of Raron. Sadly, in 1788, another fire destroyed the castle completely.

After the fire, the stones from the castle were used for building in the area. In the 19th century, the ruins were strengthened to protect them as an important historical site. Today, Tourbillon Castle is recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The castle is naturally protected by very steep land around it, and it can only be reached from the east or west. It has a central courtyard, surrounding walls, a tall tower called a keep, its own chapel, and a building for guards.
