Choluteca is one of the 18 departments, or regions, in Honduras. The main city is Choluteca, and it is the capital of the department. The Choluteca River flows through this area, shaping the land and the lives of people there. This department is important to Honduras for its culture, history, and natural beauty.

History

In ancient times, the people of Choluteca traded goods from the south of Mexico to Belize, Guatemala, parts of El Salvador, and Nicaragua. They settled in the area now called Choluteca before Spanish explorers came.

Choluteca became an official region in March 1535. After Honduras became independent from Spain, Choluteca was one of the first seven departments of the country on June 28, 1825. Over time, its borders changed, with new areas added and later split off to make other regions.

Geography

Choluteca is the southernmost department of Honduras. It covers an area of 4,360 square kilometers. In 2015, about 447,852 people lived there. The land is used for farming, fishing, making sugar, and raising shrimp. The main city is Choluteca. It sits along the Choluteca River. To reach the city, you cross the Choluteca Bridge.

Choluteca shares borders with Francisco Morazán and El Paraíso to the north. It borders the Golfo de Fonseca and Valle to the west. To the east and south, it borders Nicaragua.

Governance

The Choluteca Department in Honduras has several towns and cities called municipalities. Some of these include Apacilagua, Choluteca, and Concepción de María.

Economy

Choluteca is a place where people find valuable metals such as gold, silver, and copper. The area is also good for raising cattle.
