Conrail Shared Assets Operations

Conrail Shared Assets Operations (CSAO) is a railroad company in the United States. It is often called Conrail, with the reporting mark CRCX.

CSAO runs three important areas: North Jersey, South Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit. In these places, it works as a local carrier and helps move trains for its owners, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway.

When most of Conrail's tracks were divided between CSX and Norfolk Southern, these three areas were kept separate. This was done so that neither railroad would have an unfair advantage. CSAO uses its own workers and tracks but does not own any equipment except for maintenance-of-way equipment. This setup helps keep things fair and running smoothly for everyone involved.

North Jersey Shared Assets Area

The North Jersey Shared Assets Area is a railroad network. It runs from North Bergen Yard in North Bergen, New Jersey to Jersey City and Newark. It also goes to Monville and Trenton.

Many parts of this area share tracks with Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and New Jersey Transit lines.

Important connections go to CSX's River Subdivision north to Albany, New York. They also connect to NS's Southern Tier Line northwest to Buffalo, New York. The main yard for this area is Oak Island Yard in Newark. There are smaller yards in several nearby towns. The area has many branches and tracks connecting different parts of New Jersey and New York.

South Jersey/Philadelphia Shared Assets Area

The New Jersey Department of Transportation planned for more freight trains in South Jersey starting in 2010. This led to improvements in this area.

The South Jersey/Philadelphia Shared Assets Area is managed from Pavonia Yard in Camden, New Jersey. There are also smaller yards in several towns. It includes tracks shared with other train services, such as the Atlantic City Line and the Northeast Corridor. These tracks cover many routes across the region.

Delair Bridge

The Delair Lift Bridge has two tracks. One track is used by Conrail, and the other is used by New Jersey Transitโ€™s Atlantic City Line.

Detroit Shared Assets Area

The Detroit Shared Assets Area has important rail lines. These lines connect different parts of Detroit and nearby places. One line runs from Gibraltar, Michigan, to West Detroit. Another line goes from West Detroit to North Yard. There are also tracks that reach industrial areas in Utica and along Michigan Avenue. These rail lines help connect cities like Dearborn and Detroit, and they link up with other train services.

Locomotives

Conrail Shared Assets Operations uses different kinds of locomotives. These are provided by CSX and Norfolk Southern. Some types are the EMD GP38-2, EMD GP40-2, EMD SD40-2, EMD SD45-2, and EMD SD40E3. These special trains help move freight in the three shared areas.
