Covenant Health System

Covenant Health System is an American health care provider that serves West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. It has about 1,300 beds in its five main hospitals, including special care and clinics. Covenant Health System is part of the St. Joseph Health System, which became Providence St. Joseph Health in 2016.

The system includes major hospitals like Covenant Medical Center, Covenant Specialty Hospital, and Covenant Children's Hospital. It also has around 20 clinics and 50 places where doctors work. Covenant Health System was started in 1998 when two hospitals in Lubbock joined together: St. Mary of the Plains Hospital and the Lubbock Methodist Hospital System.

Covenant Health System helps people in rural areas far from cities by bringing medical services right to their communities with mobile clinics. This makes sure everyone can get the care they need, no matter where they live.

History

In 1918, doctors in Lubbock, Texas started a small hospital called the Lubbock Sanitarium. It was later called Lubbock General Hospital and then Lubbock Memorial Hospital to remember soldiers from Lubbock who died in World War II. In 1953, it moved to a new building and was named Methodist Hospital.

Another hospital, called Plains Hospital and Clinic, was started in 1937 by some doctors. In 1939, it was taken over by the Sisters of St. Joseph and renamed St. Mary of the Plains Hospital.

In 1998, these two hospitals merged to form Covenant Health. In 2018, Covenant Health also took over Grace Health System, which included Grace Medical Center and Grace Clinic in Lubbock.
