Derby della Capitale

The Derby della Capitale (English: Derby of the capital city), also known as Derby Capitolino and Derby del Cupolone, as well as The Rome Derby in English and Derby di Roma in Italian, is the football local derby in Rome, Italy, between Lazio and Roma. It is a very exciting match for the people of Rome.

Fans from all over come to watch and cheer for their teams. This match is very important to Roman people and full of energy.

Along with other big city matches like the Derby della Madonnina in Milan and the Derby della Mole in Turin, the Derby della Capitale is one of the greatest derbies in Europe. It shows the strong passion for football in Italy.

History

Football rivalry

Lazio was started in 1900 in the Prati area and first played in Parioli. Roma began at the Motovelodromo Appio and later moved to Testaccio when a new stadium was built. Fans of Lazio usually sit in the northern end (Curva Nord) and Roma fans in the southern end (Curva Sud) of the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma was created in 1927 by joining three teams together. The plan was to make one strong team in Rome to compete with teams from the north like Juventus. Lazio was not part of this join and stayed separate, which helped start the rivalry between the two teams.

Over the years, the match between Lazio and Roma has had some exciting moments. In 2013, Lazio won the 2013 Coppa Italia Final against Roma. In 2015, Roma's Francesco Totti scored twice in his 40th match between the two teams, becoming the top scorer in their history.

Cultural rivalry

The rivalry between the two teams is also strong because fans feel very proud about which team represents Rome. This pride is special because most top teams in Italy come from the north, like Juventus in Turin, and teams from Milan like Milan and Internazionale.

Sometimes, the passion of the fans has led to bad behavior. Fans from both teams have protested against new safety rules at the stadium.

• The first derby match was on 8 December 1929. Roma won 1–0 with a goal by Rodolfo Volk. Lazio won for the first time on 23 October 1932 with goals by Demaría (L), Volk (R) and Castelli (L).
• The biggest win ever was when Roma beat Lazio 5–0 in 1933–34. Lazio’s biggest win was 3–0, which happened in 2006–07, 2018–19 and 2020–21.
• Roma has the most consecutive wins in derbies, with five in a row. Lazio has the most wins in one season, winning four derbies in the 1997–98 season: two in the league (3–1 and 2–0) and two in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia (4–1 and 2–1).
• The derby was a cup final only once, on 26 May 2013. Lazio won 1–0, earning their sixth Coppa Italia title.

• Francesco Totti and Dino da Costa have scored the most goals in derbies, with 11 each for Roma. The top scorer for Lazio is Silvio Piola, with 7 goals.
• Vincenzo Montella holds the record for the most goals in one derby; he scored four goals on 11 March 2002 in a 5–1 Roma win.
• Arne Selmosson, Aleksandar Kolarov and Pedro are the only players to score for both teams in derbies.
• Francesco Totti has the most derby wins, with 15 for Roma. The next is Daniele De Rossi who won 14 derbies as a Roma player and 1 as Roma coach.
