Developmental psychology is the study of how and why the human mind grows and changes over a lifetime. It used to focus mostly on babies and children, but now it also looks at teenagers, adult development, aging, and the whole life span.

Developmental psychologists want to explain how thinking, feeling, and behaviors change as we grow. They study physical, thinking, and social-emotional growth.

The field looks at how both our natural traits and our experiences shape how we develop. It studies how who we are, what we do, and our surroundings all work together over time. Important questions in developmental psychology include how much our biology affects us and how flexible we are, and whether we change in steps or smoothly. This subject connects to many others, like educational psychology, child development, and cognitive psychology. Famous thinkers such as Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson have helped us understand more about how people grow and change.

Historical antecedents

Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John B. Watson helped start what we now call developmental psychology. In the 1700s, Rousseau talked about three main stages of growing up: babies, children, and teenagers, in his book Emile: Or, On Education. Many teachers liked his ideas.

Charles Darwin

Developmental psychology looks at how and why people change in their thinking, feelings, and actions as they grow. One important thinker was Erik Erikson, who described eight stages of growth that help shape who we become.

In the 1800s, some psychologists started looking at how human development connects to how humans have changed over time. G. Stanley Hall was one of these early thinkers, and James Mark Baldwin also wrote about how children develop.

Theories

Psychosexual development

Sigmund Freud created a theory about how people search for pleasure as they grow. This search changes through different stages of life.

The first stage, the oral stage, starts at birth and ends around age one and a half. Children enjoy activities like sucking. The second stage, the anal stage, lasts from about age one to three. Children become interested in their bodies and may focus on actions like passing waste.

The third stage, the phallic stage, occurs from ages three to five. Children notice their bodies more and seek love and attention. The fourth stage, the latency stage, lasts from age five until puberty. During this time, interest in early pleasures lessens. The final stage, the genital stage, begins at puberty and continues into adulthood. People start to think more about relationships and affection from others.

Theories of cognitive development

Jean Piaget thought that children learn by exploring the world and solving problems. He believed children go through stages as they learn. Each stage builds on the last one, helping children understand more complex ideas. Piaget described four main stages of learning: sensing the world, thinking symbolically, using logic in concrete ways, and thinking about ideas in abstract ways.

Stages of moral development

Lawrence Kohlberg studied how people understand right and wrong. He found that this understanding changes as people grow. Children often think about rewards and punishments when deciding what is right. As they get older, they start to consider rules and what is best for society. In adulthood, some people think more about personal values and what they believe is fair.

Stages of psychosocial development

Erik Erikson and Joan Erikson described eight stages that people go through from birth to old age. At each stage, people face a challenge that helps them grow. Successfully solving these challenges leads to positive qualities like trust, independence, and wisdom.

Stages based on the model of hierarchical complexity

Michael Commons created a way to understand how people solve increasingly complex problems. He described seventeen stages of problem-solving ability, showing how people’s thinking grows more sophisticated over time.

Ecological systems theory

Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory

Ecological systems theory, created by Urie Bronfenbrenner, describes how different parts of a person’s environment influence their growth. These parts include family, school, community, and culture. Each part affects the others, helping shape how a person develops.

Zone of proximal development

Lev Vygotsky believed that children learn best with help from adults or more experienced peers. He called this helpful period the "zone of proximal development." In this zone, adults guide children through learning by building on what they already know.

Constructivism

Constructivism is the idea that people learn by building knowledge themselves. This can happen through personal experiences or by talking and interacting with others. Learning is an active process where people make sense of new information.

Evolutionary developmental psychology

Evolutionary developmental psychology studies how human behavior and thinking develop, using ideas from evolution. It looks at both genetic factors and experiences that shape how people grow and adapt.

Attachment theory

Attachment theory explains how important close relationships are for children. It shows how early bonds with caregivers help children feel safe and secure. These early relationships can affect how people connect with others throughout their lives.

Nature vs nurture

One big question in developmental psychology is whether our traits come from our genes (nature) or our experiences (nurture). Many experts now believe both play a role. Our genes can affect how we respond to our environment, and our experiences can influence how our genes are expressed.

Continuity vs discontinuity

Developmental psychologists also debate whether growth happens smoothly over time or in distinct stages. Some believe that changes are gradual and build on earlier abilities. Others think development happens in clear stages, with new abilities appearing at certain times.

Stability vs change

Another important topic is whether people stay the same or change a lot as they grow. Most experts think that both stability and change are important. Early experiences can have lasting effects, but later experiences also shape who we become.

Theory of mind

Theory of mind is the ability to understand that others have thoughts and feelings different from our own. This skill helps children navigate social situations and build relationships. Developing theory of mind is important for communication and understanding others, and it usually happens during early childhood.

Mathematical models

Developmental psychology helps us understand how our minds change as we grow, and why these changes happen. Psychologists use special ways of thinking called models to study this. These models help us learn how our brains and behaviors develop over time.

One way to study these ideas is through mathematical modeling. This makes theories clearer and easier to test. There are different kinds of models, like symbolic models, connectionist models (which are like neural networks), and dynamical systems models. Dynamical systems models show how many parts of a complex system work together to create new skills and behaviors. These models are useful for studying how people grow and learn new things.

Research areas

Neural development

One important part of developmental psychology is how the brain grows and changes. The brain changes fast in early years, making new connections. These early changes are important because they set how the brain will work later.

Both our genes and what we experience shape the brain. Learning languages or seeing new things can change how the brain connects. During teenage years, the brain also changes a lot, getting better at thinking and making decisions.

Cognitive development

Cognitive development looks at how children learn to think, solve problems, and use their memories. This includes learning language and skills like seeing and moving. Some thinkers believe these skills develop in steps, while others think they grow more smoothly.

Adults also keep developing their thinking skills. Modern studies look at how the brain processes information and how this changes as we grow.

Social and emotional development

Social and emotional development studies how children learn to make friends, understand feelings, and build their sense of self. This includes learning to manage emotions, which starts with help from parents and caregivers. As children grow, they learn to handle their feelings themselves.

Children who have trouble with movement might also face challenges in making friends and feeling included.

Social and emotional growth includes learning about yourself, managing your feelings, understanding others, making friends, and making good choices.

Physical development

Physical development looks at how children’s bodies grow until they become adults. Most children grow in a regular way, but each child may grow at different times. Scientists study these differences to see how they relate to other areas of development.

Memory development

Researchers study how memory changes from childhood into adulthood. They find that younger children remember details well, while older children and adults get better at remembering meanings. The brain’s pathways also develop, helping memory improve during childhood.

Research methods and designs

Developmental psychology uses many of the same research methods as other areas of psychology. But because babies and children can't be tested like adults, scientists use special ways to study how they grow and change.

Researchers have several methods to study development. They might watch children in their natural settings, talk to them in interviews, or study one child in detail over time. These methods help scientists learn about how different things affect development. One important method is the experimental method, where scientists change certain conditions to see what effects they have. This helps show clear links between causes and effects. Another method is the correlational method, which looks at how different things relate to each other without changing anything. This can show patterns but doesn't prove one thing caused another. Each method has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Studies can also be designed in different ways. In a longitudinal study, scientists follow the same group of people over many years to see how they change with time. In a cross-sectional study, they look at people of different ages at one point in time. A sequential study mixes these two approaches. Scientists often use many different methods and designs to get the fullest picture of how people develop.

Prenatal development

Prenatal development helps us understand how babies grow early on. It has three main parts: the germinal stage, the embryonic stage, and the fetal stage. The germinal stage starts at conception and lasts two weeks. The embryonic stage lasts from two to eight weeks. The fetal stage runs from nine weeks until birth. Babies develop senses like sight and hearing inside the womb, and they are born with some likes for smells, tastes, and sounds.

Some early reflexes appear before birth and stay after a baby is born. These reflexes help with early growth. Babies in the womb can move and recognize their mother's voice, showing some development of hearing.

Some things can affect prenatal development. These include drugs, alcohol, infections, and stress. These can cause problems for the child later.

Infancy

Infancy lasts from birth to the first year. During this time, children experience the world in special ways. Babies spend a lot of time sleeping, and their sleep patterns change over the first few months.

Infants have five senses: vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Vision gets better over time, while hearing is strong at birth. Babies show likes for smells and tastes influenced by what their mother ate. Touch is one of the first senses to develop.

Language

Babies are born able to hear almost all sounds in human languages. Around six months, they start to focus on the sounds of their own language. They begin to make sounds like vowels and consonants, known as babbling.

Infant cognition: the Piagetian era

Jean Piaget thought that an infant's understanding of the world depends on moving and interacting with objects. Object permanence is the idea that objects still exist even when not seen. Most babies show signs of this around eight months.

Recent research suggests that infants may understand more about the world than we thought. Some believe that understanding object permanence comes naturally.

Critical periods of development

There are important times in early development when certain skills need the right stimulation. Without this, some skills may not develop fully. This idea also applies to brain development.

Toddlerhood

Toddlerhood is from one to two years old. During this stage, children start to walk, talk, and make their own choices. Language development is very important at this stage. Toddlers begin to explore and learn from their mistakes. They also start to understand gender roles.

Childhood

Erikson described childhood as having four stages, each with its own challenge:

  • Infancy (0 to 1½): Trust vs. Mistrust
  • Early childhood (2½ to 3): Autonomy vs. Shame and doubt
  • Play age (3 to 5): Initiative vs. Guilt
  • School age (5 to 12): Industry vs. Inferiority

Middle and Late childhood ages 6–12

According to Erik Erikson, the challenge in middle childhood is Industry vs. Inferiority. Meeting this challenge helps children feel capable.

Middle Childhood (6–8) Late Childhood (9–12)

Adolescence

Adolescence is the time between the start of puberty and taking on adult roles. It is a time for forming personal identity and finding purpose. Intelligence grows through logical thinking.

Erikson called this stage identity versus role confusion. Adolescents explore who they are and what they want to become. Successfully navigating this stage helps build a strong sense of self for adulthood.

Early adulthood

Early adulthood is roughly ages 18 to 39. This stage focuses on building relationships. Intimacy versus isolation is the challenge here. Building strong relationships is important, and having a sense of identity helps in forming these connections.

Middle adulthood

Middle adulthood is roughly ages 40 to 64. The challenge here is generativity versus stagnation. Adults often think about how they help society or future generations. Physical changes occur, such as changes in strength and senses.

Old age

Old age begins around 65 in many places. The challenge is integrity versus despair. Older adults look back on their lives. Physical changes include weaker muscles and senses. Some may face memory challenges. Many continue to enjoy life and stay active.

Parenting

Parenting is very important for how children grow and develop. Parents have different ways of raising their children, and this can affect how well children do in school and with friends.

There are a few main types of parenting styles. One style is called authoritative, where parents are warm and supportive but also set clear rules. Children with these parents often do well in school and get along with others. Another style is authoritarian, where parents are strict and focus on rules but may not show much warmth. This can sometimes make it harder for children to feel good about themselves. A third style is permissive, where parents are very relaxed and don’t set many rules. This can sometimes make it harder for children to learn self-control. Finally, some parents may be neglectful, showing little interest or support, which can make it hard for children to grow and learn well.

Both mothers and fathers are important in a child’s life. Even children with one parent or parents of the same gender can grow up happy and healthy. What matters most is that children have at least one caring adult they can trust and feel close to.

Divorce can also affect children, but it doesn’t always mean children will have problems. Many children from divorced families grow up just fine. What helps is when parents continue to work together and support each other, even after they are no longer married. Warm relationships with both parents and good communication can help children through this change.

Cross-cultural

Studying development in different cultures helps us learn how people grow and change. Most psychology studies have been done with people from Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic countries. But not all human development is the same everywhere. Looking at different regions teaches us more about how people grow.

One example is the Indian model of development, which is based on Hinduism and focuses on morality and relationships. In this model, families help children grow at their own pace. For example, children are not rushed to learn to use the toilet. This model values dependency and belonging, unlike Western models that focus more on independence. As children grow, they learn about their duties and responsibilities, called Dharma, and care for others.
