Hadley–Apennine

Hadley–Apennine is an interesting area on the near side of Earth's Moon. It was chosen for the American Apollo 15 mission in July 1971. This was the fourth time people went to the Moon.

The site is on the edge of a dark area called Mare Imbrium, on a flat surface known as Palus Putredinis. It is next to a mountain range named the Montes Apenninus, and a winding channel called Hadley Rille.

Scientists looked at soil samples brought back from Apollo 15. They found that most samples from the mountains were special rocks called brown-glass breccias. Samples from the flat surface were mostly basalt. These rocks helped scientists learn more about the Moon.

Geography and geology

Hadley–Apennine is located west of the Montes Apenninus and east of Hadley Rille. The Apennine mountains rise high above the plain where Hadley is found. Hadley Rille is a long, winding channel west of the Apollo 15 landing site. It was studied during that mission. The feature was likely formed by old volcanic activity on the Moon.

The American Apollo 15 mission landed in the Hadley–Apennine region. This was the first of the J-series missions, which had more scientific tools and a special vehicle for moving around on the Moon. The landing spot was chosen so astronauts could explore the Apennine Front and Hadley Rille, and look at interesting rocks and landforms.

The Apennine mountains may have been pushed up by an old impact that created a big sea of lava called Mare Imbrium. One of the mountains, Mons Hadley Delta, was an important place to visit. Astronauts thought it might show what the Moon’s surface looked like before that big impact.

Hadley Rille is a winding channel that starts near a crater called Béla and runs along the mountains. Some think it was made by old volcanic flows, while others believe it might have been a hidden tunnel that collapsed. The rille is deep and wide, and astronauts saw big rocks along its floor.

The South Cluster is a group of craters believed to have been caused by material thrown from a faraway impact. It let astronauts collect samples from deep inside the Moon without traveling far. The North Complex was another area of craters thought to be from volcanic activity, but the astronauts did not get to visit it because they ran out of time.
