Homburg is a town in the state of Saarland, Germany. It is the third largest town in Saarland and had a population of 43,029 people in 2022. As the administrative center of the Saarpfalz district, Homburg is very important for the area.

The town provides more than 30,000 jobs, making it a big workplace for the region. Well-known companies such as Robert Bosch GmbH, Schaeffler Group, and Michelin have major operations there.

Homburg is also home to the medical department of the University of Saarland and the Karlsberg beer brewery, which adds to its importance in education and local industry.

Geography

Homburg is in the northern part of the Saarpfalz district and borders Rhineland-Palatinate. It is 16 km from Neunkirchen and 36 km from Saarbrücken.

The city districts are in the Blies valley or near its smaller streams Erbach, Lambsbach, and Schwarzbach. Homburg includes the main area and nine smaller districts: Beeden, Bruchhof-Sanddorf, Einöd, Erbach, Jägersburg, Kirrberg, Reiskirchen, Schwarzenbach, and Wörschweiler.

History

Homburg has a long history. It started as a village in the 12th century and became a town in 1330. Over time, it has been part of many different regions and countries, including the County of Homburg, the Kingdom of France, the Kingdom of Bavaria, the German Empire, and now Germany. Today, the old Hohenburg Castle, now in ruins, reminds us of its past.

Politics

Since 1974, Homburg has had a Lord Mayor instead of a Mayor.

Rüdiger Schneidewind from the SPD party has been the Lord Mayor of Homburg since October 1, 2014.

Transport

Homburg has a main railway station called Homburg (Saar) Hauptbahnhof. Long-distance and regional trains stop there. You can also drive to Homburg using the motorways A6 (exit Homburg) and A8 (exits Limbach and Einöd).
