Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" is a famous phrase from the United States Declaration of Independence. It talks about three important rights that everyone should have. The United States Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by the Committee of Five. This group included Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. It was approved by the Committee of the Whole of the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The phrase "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" is in the second paragraph of the Declaration.

Jefferson’s first draft of the Declaration is shown in the Library of Congress. People have wondered where Jefferson got the idea for this phrase. Some think it came from John Locke, while others believe Jean-Jacques Rousseau may have had more influence.

The idea of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is found in many important documents around the world. For example, Canada's laws speak about "life, liberty, security of the person." In the United States, the constitution protects "life, liberty, or property" and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security.
