List of Sonic the Hedgehog characters

The Sonic the Hedgehog video game series began in 1991 with the game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. In it, a blue animal character named Sonic, who is a hedgehog, faced a villain named Doctor Eggman, also called Doctor Ivo Robotnik. The sequel, Sonic 2, gave Sonic a fox friend named Tails. Sonic CD introduced Amy Rose, a hedgehog who liked Sonic very much. Sonic 3 introduced Knuckles the Echidna, who started as Sonic's rival and later became his friend. All five of these characters have stayed important parts of the series and have appeared in many games.

Over the years, the series has added many other characters that appear again and again. These include animal characters such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Cream the Rabbit, robots made by Eggman such as Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega, and human characters such as Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik. The series also has three made-up kinds of creatures. Chao are usually digital pets and small parts of the games and story. Wisps are used as power-ups. Koco give Sonic new abilities when they are collected, among other things.

The Sonic games follow a separate storyline from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics and other Sonic media. Because of this, the games feature a different but overlapping group of many characters.
