List of islands of Indonesia
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
The islands of Indonesia, also called the Indonesian Archipelago or Nusantara, are a huge group of islands that make up the country of Indonesia. Indonesia is the largest country made up of many islands in the world. Its islands stretch from Sumatra in Asia all the way to the western part of New Guinea in Oceania. These islands are very important because they are part of a big country with many people, cultures, and natural wonders.
History
The number of islands in Indonesia changes depending on how you count them. Some counts say there are about 13,000 islands, while others say there are about 17,000. This happens because some small islands only appear when the tide is low and disappear when the tide comes in. As of 2023, officials have named 17,024 of these islands.
Major islands
Indonesia has many large islands. Some of the main ones are the Greater Sunda Islands. These include Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and Sulawesi. Borneo is shared by Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia. The Lesser Sunda Islands include Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba, and Timor. Timor is split between Indonesia and East Timor. Other important islands are the Maluku Islands and the western part of New Guinea. This area is divided among several Indonesian provinces and Papua New Guinea.
