Lithic technology is a cool subject in archaeology. It looks at how people made tools from stone. Archaeologists use this term for many ways humans shaped stone to make useful things. The oldest known stone tools were found at a place called Lomekwi 3 in Kenya. They are about 3.3 million years old!

The study of stone tools is usually split into three big time periods: the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age), the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), and the Neolithic (New Stone Age). Not every culture or place followed the same path, but these periods help us learn when making stone tools was most important.

By watching how some communities today still use stone tools, scientists can learn more about why ancient people made tools in certain ways. Good materials for making stone tools have special traits that make them easy to work with. A good stone should break in a predictable way, so the person shaping it can control how the tool looks.

People pick different materials for many reasons, like how easy they are to find or how close they are. Sometimes, people use materials that aren’t perfect, depending on what’s nearby. Scientists study these choices to learn about how people managed things long ago. They found that using less perfect materials could sometimes help people get more resources faster, showing that choosing materials isn’t always about picking the best quality.

Stone tools are made using a process called lithic reduction. The method depends on how detailed the tool needs to be.

A simple way is to use a hammerstone, a hard rock like sandstone, to hit the stone and break off big pieces. This makes a basic shape called a preform that needs more work.

For more detail, a soft hammer made of wood or bone can be used to carefully remove smaller pieces. The most detailed method is called pressure flaking, where small pieces are pressed off the stone using tools like bone or antler. Sometimes, a punch and a hammer are used together to apply pressure to a specific spot.

Mostly, the main pieces of stone get used up, so smaller pieces called debitage are shaped into tools like arrowheads and handaxes.

The type of stone matters because some stones break in a way that makes sharp, big pieces perfect for tools. Stones with tiny crystals, called cryptocrystalline, and that break in smooth, curved ways are best. Obsidian is a great example because it has these properties, which made it popular for early toolmakers in the Middle East and America.
