National security of the United States

The national security of the United States is about keeping the country safe and strong. The government makes plans to protect the people and land of the United States.

This safety plan has two big parts: national defense and foreign relations. National defense means keeping the military ready to protect the country. Foreign relations means working with other countries to build friendships and keep peace. This helps everyone live safely together.

Keeping national security is very important. It helps the United States stay safe, strong, and respected. Many groups work together, like the military, government leaders, and people who study other countries.

Elements of policy

The United States keeps the country safe in several important ways. One way is by talking and making friends with other countries. The country also uses its money to help others work together.

Other steps include having strong armed forces, planning for emergencies, and making sure important systems like power grids are safe. Special services work to stop dangers before they happen and keep important secrets safe. There are also teams that focus on stopping threats from inside the country.

U.S. Constitution

The idea of "national security" began during the Constitutional Convention. Some leaders, like those in the Federalist Party, thought a strong central government was needed to keep the military safe. Alexander Hamilton wrote that a well-organized group of people should defend the country, managed by those protecting the nation’s safety.

Organization

U.S. national security organizations have stayed mostly the same since U.S. president Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 and its 1949 change. This act created the National Military Establishment, which later became the Department of Defense in 1949. It also formed a separate Department of the Air Force from the United States Army Air Forces, put all military branches under the new Secretary of Defense, set up the National Security Council to help plan security policies, and started the Central Intelligence Agency.

Civil liberties

After the September 11 attacks in 2001, a law called the USA Patriot Act was passed. This law changed some rules to help keep the country safe.

Many people talked about whether it was fair to change rights and freedoms to protect the country.

One big discussion was about whether it was okay for intelligence agencies to watch people without getting a warrant first. In August 2008, a special court said this kind of watching was allowed to help keep the country safe.
