Neumarkt, also called Egna, is a lovely village and municipality in the beautiful area of South Tyrol in northern Italy. It lies about 25 kilometres, or 16 miles, south of the city of Bolzano. Neumarkt is special because it is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, earning a place among I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The village has an interesting history and lets visitors see traditional alpine life. People can walk through its narrow streets, see old buildings, and enjoy the calm countryside around it.

Geography

Neumarkt is a village in South Tyrol, Italy. It has a population of 5,001 people and covers an area of 23 square kilometres. The village sits 214 metres above sea level on the left side of the Adige river.

Neumarkt is part of the Überetsch-Unterland district. It is known for its old town, arcades, and important buildings like the parish church and the Local Culture Museum. Neumarkt shares borders with nearby municipalities such as Kaltern, Kurtatsch, and Salorno.

The area includes smaller villages and hamlets called frazioni, such as Laag, Mazon, St. Florian, and Vill.

History

Coat-of-arms

The village's symbol has two parts. One side shows a silver crescent moon on red. The other side shows a red cross with short arms on silver. This symbol was given to the village, called Newnmarkt at the time, in a document from 1395. The emblem was granted in 1967.

Society

In Neumarkt, people speak two main languages. About 61% speak German first. Around 39% speak Italian, and a very small group, about 0.4%, speak Ladin.

The town has famous people, like Lilli Gruber, a well-known journalist who was born there. Neumarkt is also home to an ice hockey team called HC Neumarkt-Egna.
