North Bačka District

The North Bačka District (Serbian: Севернобачки округ, romanized: Severnobački okrug, pronounced ) is one of the districts of Serbia. It is in the region called Bačka. The biggest city and main center is Subotica. This area is part of the Pannonian Plain, which is known for its farming and many different cultures.

History

In the 9th century, the area now called the North Bačka District was ruled by a leader named Salan. From the 11th to the 16th century, it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary.

Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, the area was ruled by the Ottomans and was part of the Sanjak of Segedin. In the 18th century, it came under Habsburg control and was split between the Military Frontier and Batsch County. Over time, the area was reorganized into different counties and districts.

In the 20th century, the region was part of Yugoslavia, first in Novi Sad County, then Bačka Oblast, and later Danube Banovina. After World War II, it became part of the autonomous Vojvodina within Serbia. The modern administrative districts of Serbia, including the North Bačka District, were created in 1992.

Cities and municipalities

The North Bačka District has one city and two municipalities. They are:

• Bačka Topola (Hungarian: Topolya) (municipality)
• Mali Iđoš (Hungarian: Kishegyes) (municipality)

Demographics

The North Bačka District has two main towns. Subotica has many people, and Bačka Topola has fewer people.

In some places, most people speak Hungarian, while in others, most people speak Serbian. This makes the area very interesting and diverse.
