Oppo is a big company that makes electronic products. It is based in Shenzhen, China, and started in 2004. Oppo makes many things people use every day, like smartphones, smart devices, audio devices, and power banks.

The company is one of the biggest makers of smartphones in the world. It reaches many people in over 60 countries. Oppo competes with other well-known brands like Samsung and Xiaomi.

Oppo also owns other smartphone brands, including Realme and OnePlus. This helps it give customers many choices.

History

The brand name "Oppo" was registered in China in 2001 and started in 2004 by Tony Chen in Dongguan, China. In 2005, they showed their first device, the Oppo X3 MP3 player. Since then, Oppo has grown to sell in over 50 countries and become well-known in electronics.

In June 2016, Oppo became the top smartphone maker in China, selling phones in more than 200,000 stores. In 2019, Oppo was fifth in the world for smartphone sales. By 2024, Oppo was fourth in the global smartphone market. That year, Oppo also ranked sixth globally for receiving patents, with over 54,000 granted.

Branding

Oppo has worked with many famous people and teams to share their brand. In 2010, they worked with a music group from South Korea called 2PM to start their brand in Thailand. In 2015, Oppo became a sponsor for the famous Spanish football club FC Barcelona.

Oppo has also worked with sports leagues and teams, like the Philippine Basketball Association and the India national cricket team. They have sponsored big events such as the French Open tennis tournament in Paris and the Wimbledon Championships. Oppo also supports Riot Games and their League of Legends tournament. In 2024, they chose members of the music group Seventeen, specifically their subunit BSS, as brand ambassadors in the Asia-Pacific region.

Headphones and amplifiers

In 2015, Oppo made the HA-2, a portable music player. It had a battery and a leather case. It could play music using a special cable. An updated version, the HA-2SE, came out in 2016.

Smartwatches

Oppo started with its first smartwatch, the OPPO Watch, in March 2020 in China. Later, they made the OPPO Watch 2, then the Watch 3 Pro in 2022, and the Watch 4 Pro in 2024.

Research and development

Oppo has created special ways to make their phones charge very quickly. These methods began in 2014 and have gotten better over time. Some of these fast charging methods can charge a phone up to 67% in just 30 minutes, or even faster with newer versions.

In 2023, Oppo worked with Hasselblad to make better cameras for their phones, which will be in future models. Oppo was also ranked 9th in the world for the number of patents they applied for in 2023.

Criticism

Oppo has had some problems in different countries. In 2022, a company named Nokia said Oppo used their technology without paying. A court in Germany stopped Oppo from selling phones there for a short time. In India, the government fined Oppo for not following tax rules. In 2025, phones in Thailand had an app that was not allowed. After people complained, the company said they would stop this.
