Sacramento City College

Sacramento City College (SCC) is a public community college in Sacramento, California. It is part of the Los Rios Community College District. SCC offers Associate in Science (A.S) and Associate in Art (A.A.) degrees, helping students get ready for future learning or jobs.

History

Sacramento City College began in 1916 as part of Sacramento High School. It is the seventh oldest public community college in California. A woman named Belle Cooledge started the college, and its first graduates were all women. She wanted to create a friendly place for students to learn and for the community to come together.

In 1922, Sacramento created a new school district, allowing the college to operate on its own. Later, in 1964, it joined the Los Rios Junior College District, which also includes American River College and Cosumnes River College. The district bought the college's 75-acre campus for just $1.00.

Student life

Sacramento City College has more than 50 clubs and groups for students to join. It does not have any fraternities or sororities, and there are no dorms on campus.

In the 1920s, the school's yearbook was called the Pioneer. It changed its format in the early 1970s and stopped being published by 1980. The school newspaper was first called "the Blotter" in the 1920s, then "The Pony Express" for many years, and is now known as "the Express."

Athletics

The Sacramento City College Panthers play in the California Community College Athletic Association and the Big 8 Conference. The college has 18 teams, 10 for women and 8 for men. The baseball team has won many league titles, state titles, and one national title. The women's track and field team won several state titles. The softball team also won state titles. Many athletes from Sacramento City College have competed in big events like the Olympic Games, the World Series, and the NFL playoffs. Some coaches from the college have worked in important roles in big competitions.

Sacramento City College has had some well-known people who studied there. The most famous is Sasha Gray. Other notable alumni include Academy Award-winning actress Jessica Chastain, senior United States district judge Morrison C. England Jr., and Congressman John E. Moss.
