Sekela

Sekela is one of the areas, called woredas, in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. It is located in the West Gojjam Zone.

Sekela shares borders with several other areas. To the southwest, it is next to Bure, and to the west lies the Agew Awi Zone. On the north, it touches Mecha, while Yilmana Densa is to the northeast. To the east, you will find Kuarit, and Jabi Tehnan is on the southeast side.

The main town that serves as the center for Sekela is Gish Abay.

Overview

The Lesser Abay River, the top part of the Blue Nile, starts in Sekela and flows north into Lake Tana.

In June 2002, heavy rains caused flooding and landslides in nine areas of Sekela and nearby places. This damaged land where crops were growing and destroyed some harvested crops. Many animals were also affected.

Demographics

Sekela is a place where many people live. In 2007, a count showed that 138,691 people lived there. Most of them spoke Amharic and practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.

In 1994, the count was lower, with 85,950 people living in Sekela. Almost all of them were from the Amhara group and also practiced Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity.
