A slide whistle is a fun and easy musical instrument. You can change its sound simply by moving a part called a slide. It is also known as a swanee, swannee whistle, lotus flute, piston flute, or jazz flute. The slide whistle is a type of wind instrument.

You play it using a special mouthpiece called a fipple, which looks like the mouthpiece of a recorder. The slide whistle has a tube with a moving part called a piston.

When you move the slide up and down while blowing, you change the pitch. This lets you make smooth, gliding notes called a glissando. You can make high, squeaky sounds or low, whistling tones. The slide whistle is fun because it can make many different sounds.

History

Piston flutes were used in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and Europe long ago. The modern slide whistle was created in England in the nineteenth century. Today, these instruments are usually made from plastic or metal.

The slide whistle is known as a sound effect, like in animated cartoon sound tracks. It can show something moving up or down quickly. It can also be used to play melodies. The swanee whistle was made by the Distin family in the 1840s. Other early makers included J Stevens & Son and H A Ward. By the 1920s, the slide whistle was popular in the US. It was used in popular music and jazz. It appeared in early recordings, like Paul Whiteman's “Whispering” from 1920. Famous musicians like Louis Armstrong used the slide whistle in some recordings. The slide whistle was also part of Jug band music in the 1920s. Later, in 1935, Gavin Gordon used a slide whistle in his ballet The Rake's Progress.

Uses

The slide whistle is a fun toy, but it is also used in music. It was first used in classical music by Maurice Ravel in his opera L'enfant et les sortilèges. Other classical music composers like Paul Hindemith, Luciano Berio, and György Ligeti have also used it.

Famous musicians such as Roger Waters from Pink Floyd have used the slide whistle in their songs. It can also be heard in pop music and comedy shows, where it adds a special sound.
