Snow rugby

Snow rugby is a fun way to play a classic sport in a special winter setting. It is a version of rugby union changed for playing in deep snow during winter. People enjoy snow rugby in many cold places around the world, such as Canada, the Kashmir region in India, the Baltic states, Russia, the northern United States, and Finland.

Some great places where snow rugby is played include the Argentinian Ski Resort of Las Leñas and the Boitsfort Rugby Club in Brussels. Because the weather can get very cold, often below freezing, players need to wear lots of warm clothes to stay comfortable and safe while playing.

History

Rugby union is sometimes played in winter, even in very cold weather. In 1939, a game in New Zealand was played in the snow. In 1978, a game in Russia happened at −23 °C (−9 °F). Today, snow rugby tournaments happen in many places. In 2009, Gulmarg hosted India’s first snow rugby tournament in Kashmir, as part of the 2008 Indian Winter Games. During the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Mount Dobson held a special seven-a-side snow rugby event. Tournaments have also taken place in Finland, France, Latvia, and Argentina.

The first European Championships were held in Moscow from November 21 to 22, 2019, with eight teams competing.
