Sudan at the Olympics

Sudan first joined the Olympic Games in 1960 and has sent athletes to most Summer Olympic Games since then. They missed the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan, and joined most African nations in boycotting the 1976 Summer Olympics. Sudan also took part in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. They have never participated in the Winter Olympic Games.

In 2008, Ismail Ahmed Ismail became Sudan’s first Olympic medalist by coming second in the men’s 800 m race.

The National Olympic Committee for Sudan was created in 1956 and was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1959.
