Tea bag

A tea bag is a small, sealed bag that usually contains tea leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant or leaves from other herbs. When you put a tea bag into hot water, the leaves inside release their flavor and color, making a drink called an infusion. Tea bags make it easy and quick to prepare tea.

Tea bags are often made from filter paper or food-grade plastic. Some are even made from natural materials like silk cotton or silk. They work like a tea infuser, letting the tea flavors come out while keeping the leaves inside. Many tea bags have a string on top with a label, which helps you remove the bag from your drink and shows the brand or type of tea.

You can use a tea bag more than once, but only until there are no more flavors left to extract. Some special tea filters let you pour loose tea into a bag for brewing in a cup. Whether you like traditional tea or herbal tisanes, tea bags offer a simple way to enjoy a warm, comforting drink.

History

Tea bags have been around since 1903. Two women from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, got a patent for a Tea Leaf Holder. At first, these tea bags were made by hand from fabric.

Around 1904, a tea seller named Thomas Sullivan started selling silk tea bags. People liked to steep the tea right in the bag instead of taking the leaves out.

In 1929, Adolf Rambold invented a machine called Pompadour. This machine could make 35 tea bags a minute! In 1949, Rambold made a new machine called Constanta. This machine could make special tea bags with two sections. By 1990, this machine was updated to Perfecta, which could make up to 400 tea bags every minute.

In 1930, someone invented a tea bag made from sealed paper. In 1944, the rectangular tea bag was created. Before that, tea bags looked more like tiny sacks.

Production

Many kinds of teas and herbal drinks come in tea bags. These bags often have smaller tea leaves left over from bigger pieces sold loose, but some bags have whole leaves.

Tea bags are usually square or rectangle shaped. They are most often made from filter paper, which is like the paper in milk or coffee filters. Some bags have plastic parts, so they cannot fully break down naturally. Newer bags can be circular. Some bags are shaped like pyramids and are made from materials like nylon or silk. Empty tea bags are also sold so people can fill them with their own tea leaves.

Recreational and practical applications

People like to collect pretty tea bags from all over the world, and there are clubs for tea bag collectors in many places. These clubs have online tools to help members keep track of their collections and swap items. Collectors might also gather other tea-related things, like labels, and talk about their hobbies in online groups.

In the Netherlands, a fun craft called teabag folding began. It was started by Tiny van der Plas. This craft is like origami, where paper from tea bag wrappers is cut into squares and folded into nice shapes called rosettes. These rosettes are often used to make gift cards look pretty and have become popular in the US and UK since the year 2000.

Soil scientists sometimes use special tea bags to learn how quickly natural materials break down in different kinds of soil.
