This article gives a simple timeline of rocket and missile technology. Rockets and missiles have been important in history. They started as simple fireworks and grew into powerful tools that can go into space. Learning about their history shows us how humans found new ways to travel and reach far-off places. The story of rockets and missiles includes many exciting inventions that changed how we think about travel and safety.

11th century – 13th century

In the 11th century, China had the first known records of gunpowder and a device called the fire arrow, an early type of rocket. Around the year 1250 in Europe, Roger Bacon and a book called the Liber Ignium shared ways to make what look like rockets.

17th century – 19th century

In the 1600s and 1800s, many important steps were taken in rocket technology. In 1633, Lagâri Hasan Çelebi launched a rocket with seven wings from Istanbul using gunpowder. In 1798, Tipu Sultan, the King of Mysore in India, made and used iron rockets against the British Army. The British Army later created their own version called the Congreve rocket in 1801.

Other inventors also made important contributions. In 1844, William Hale created a rocket that spun to stay steady in flight. In 1861, William Leitch wrote about how rockets could travel to space because they would work better without air. These early ideas helped lay the groundwork for future advances in rocket technology.

20th century

  • 1966 - The USSR’s Luna 9 was the first spacecraft to land softly on the Moon.
  • 1966 - The USSR launched Soyuz spacecraft. This spacecraft has been used for many years in Soviet, Russian, and International space missions.
  • 1968 - The USSR’s Zond 5 sent two tortoises and some smaller living things around the Moon. They came back safely to Earth.
  • 1968 - The US Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission to reach and orbit the Moon.
  • 1969 - The US Apollo 11 was the first mission where people landed on the Moon and walked on its surface.
  • 1975 - The ESA, the European Space Agency, was created.
  • 1979 - The EU’s Ariane 1 was the first Ariane European rocket.
  • 1980 - The EU’s Arianespace was created. This was the world’s first company to sell space travel services.
  • 1981 - The US Space Shuttle was designed to be used again and again and could land like a plane.
  • 1988 - The EU’s Ariane 4 had its first launch.
  • 1988 - The USSR’s Energia rocket carried the Buran spaceplane into orbit.
  • 1996 - The EU’s Ariane 5 had its first flight but it failed and fell apart during the flight. After that, Ariane 5 became the main European rocket for many years.
  • 1998 - The US Deep Space 1 was the first deep space mission to use an ion thruster to move.
  • 1998 - Russia launched the Zarya module. This was the first part of the International Space Station.

21st century

In the 21st century, many exciting things happened in space travel. In 2001, a Russian spacecraft took the first space tourist to the International Space Station. In 2004, a private spacecraft called SpaceShipOne showed that space travel could be reused. In 2008, SpaceX launched a rocket into space for the first time as a private company.

Later, in 2012, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft connected with the International Space Station for the first time. In 2014 and 2015, SpaceX landed a rocket part back on Earth. In 2018, New Zealand launched its first rocket into space, which carried a bright, spinning satellite called "Humanity Star." In 2023, India landed a spacecraft on a new part of the Moon, and in 2024, SpaceX caught a rocket part for the first time.
