Uniondale is a small community in central Nassau County, New York, on Long Island. It is part of the Town of Hempstead and close to the New York metropolitan area.
In the 2020 United States census, Uniondale had a population of 32,473 people.
The area is known for important schools and places, including Nassau Community College and part of Hofstra University. It is also home to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. These places make Uniondale an interesting part of Long Island.
History
In 1830, a small schoolhouse was built where the Uniondale Public Library is today. Hofstra University began in 1935, using the home of William S. Hofstra, now named Netherlands Hall.
In the early 1970s, some people in Uniondale wanted to become an official village. They were unhappy with how plans for Mitchel Field were being handled. But these plans did not happen, and Uniondale stayed part of the Town of Hempstead. Until 2015, the area north of the Hempstead Turnpike was called East Garden City.
Geography
Uniondale covers 2.7 square miles of land, as measured by the United States Census Bureau. It grew larger between the 2010 and 2020 censuses when it took in the area of East Garden City.
Uniondale has a Humid subtropical climate, meaning cool, wet winters and hot, humid summers. Rain falls throughout the year, with a bit more in spring and fall. The area is in hardiness zone 7b, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Economy
Lufthansa United States moved its headquarters to Uniondale in 2019, coming from nearby East Meadow.
Previously, Swiss International Air Lines had its United States office in Uniondale. The airline moved its offices from Melville, New York around 2002.
Demographics
Uniondale had a population of 32,473 as of the 2020 census. The median age was 35.3 years, with many residents under 18 and some aged 65 or older. Most people lived in urban areas.
In 2000, there were 23,011 people living in Uniondale. The community had a mix of different racial and ethnic groups. Many families had children, and the median income for families was around $67,264. Some of the population lived below the poverty line.

Sports
Uniondale was once home to the New York Islanders, a hockey team. They played at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum from 1972 until 2015. The team was supposed to move to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2014–15, but they came back to the Coliseum. They played there again until 2021, when they moved to the UBS Arena.
Notable people
Uniondale is the hometown of several well-known people. Chef Richard Blais was born there and appeared on TV shows. Gary Dell'Abate, also called Baba Booey, grew up in Uniondale and works for The Howard Stern Show.
Other famous people from Uniondale include Edward Goljan, a teacher who helps students prepare for medical tests; Sheryl Lee Ralph, an actress and singer known for her work on Broadway and in movies; and John Moschitta Jr., a spokesperson who appeared in many commercials. Aljamain Sterling, a top mixed martial artist, was born and raised in Uniondale. Rapper Busta Rhymes graduated from Uniondale High School.
In popular culture
Uniondale is a popular place for filming movies. Some scenes from the movie The Spirit of St. Louis (1957) were set at Roosevelt Field, which is in the East Garden City part of Uniondale. Also, parts of the film The Godfather (1972) were shot at Nassau Community College, using the old runways from the Mitchel Air Force Base.
