The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is a public university in Anchorage, Alaska, United States. It is the largest university in the University of Alaska System and serves many students. These students study at the main campus and four smaller campuses in Southcentral Alaska. These smaller campuses are Kenai Peninsula College, Kodiak College, Matanuska–Susitna College, and Prince William Sound College.
The main campus is located a short distance from downtown Anchorage, in the University-Medical District. It is close to places such as the Alaska Native Medical Center, Alaska Pacific University, and Providence Alaska Medical Center. UAA has five main academic units. These include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Public Policy, Community and Technical College, College of Engineering, and College of Health.
UAA offers many programs, including master's degrees and graduate certificates. Students can also work toward a PhD through partnerships with other universities. The university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Its School of Education had some issues with accreditation but can now offer certain education programs again.
History
In 1954, the Anchorage Community College began offering evening classes at Elmendorf Air Force Base. By 1962, it joined the University of Alaska system. Soon after, it started offering classes during the day at its current location.
In the late 1960s, people wanted a full university in Anchorage. This led to the creation of the University of Alaska, Anchorage Senior College, which offered advanced degrees and professional training. The first graduation happened in 1971, with many students receiving their degrees.
Over time, the school grew. Today, it offers many different programs and has thousands of students from Alaska and around the world. It remains one of the largest universities in the state.
Academics
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) offers many programs for students. One special program is Alaska Native Studies. Here, students learn about the history, languages, and arts of Alaska’s Indigenous peoples. They can take classes in traditional skills, taught by visiting elders.
UAA has partnerships with law schools at the University of Washington and Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. This helps students finish their undergraduate and law degrees faster. The university is part of the University of the Arctic, which lets students study in cold regions around the world. UAA also offers degrees in aviation, like air traffic control and piloting.
The university has several colleges and schools, such as the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Public Policy, and the School of Education. It has libraries on its main campus and other locations. UAA provides financial aid and supports research centers focused on Alaska and the Arctic.
Rankings
In 2020, the U.S. News & World Report said the University of Alaska Anchorage was tied for 25th among public schools in the West. The next year, Forbes ranked UAA 635th out of 650 schools.
Publications
The University of Alaska Anchorage has several publications. Accolades is the university magazine for alumni and friends. There is also a literary magazine called The Alaska Quarterly Review published by the university. The student newspaper is called The Northern Light. Another magazine, Understory, is run by graduate students in Creative Writing and Literary Arts and is open to all undergraduate students for submissions. Lastly, True North is a yearly magazine made by students in the Department of Journalism and Public Communications.
Athletics

The University of Alaska Anchorage's teams are called the Seawolves. They play in 13 sports, like ice hockey, basketball, skiing, and volleyball. The teams play in some of Alaska’s best sports places, such as the Avis Alaska Sports Complex and Sullivan Arena for hockey, and the Alaska Airlines Center for volleyball and basketball. The skiers train on Mount Alyeska.
Student life
The University of Alaska Anchorage is a place where students can join many activities. Many classes have fewer than 20 students, so everyone can get to know each other. Popular subjects to study include business, health professions, engineering, psychology, and social sciences.
Students can choose from different places to live. There are five areas, including three residence halls and apartment-style buildings. Most students have their own private bedroom. The university has a student government group that helps plan events and services. There is also a student newspaper and a radio station run by students.
