"When You Reach Me" is a science fiction and mystery novel that won the Newbery Medal. It was written by Rebecca Stead and published in 2009. The story happens in the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the years 1978 and 1979. It is about a sixth-grade girl named Miranda Sinclair.

Plot

Miranda is a sixth grader who lives with her single mother. Her mother will be on a game show called $20,000 Pyramid. Miranda and her mom's boyfriend, Richard, are helping her practice.

Miranda gets strange notes telling her to write a letter about things that will happen in the future. The notes say they are from someone traveling to her time to save a life. They also give her proof by describing things that really happen.

One day, Miranda's friend Sal almost gets hit by a truck. A homeless man, called the "laughing man" because he often laughs for no reason, pushes Sal out of the way and gets hit instead. Miranda later finds out that this man came from the future to save Sal. The story ends with Miranda giving a letter to her friend Marcus, as the laughing man asked her to do in the notes.

When You Reach Me was published on July 14, 2009, by Wendy Lamb Books, part of Random House Children's Books. Many people liked the book. It was on many bestseller lists. It was on the New York Times Best Seller list for 16 weeks and also on the USA Today and Los Angeles Times bestseller lists.

Reviewers liked how the book showed everyday life and the characters. They thought the story felt real, especially how it showed New York City in the 1970s. They liked how every detail helped tell the bigger story.

2010 Newbery Medal

The book won the Newbery Medal in 2010. This award is given each year for the best children’s book in America. The people who chose the winner liked how every part of the book helped the story and the characters.

2012 survey

In 2012, a big survey by School Library Journal asked people to pick their favorite children’s books. When You Reach Me was chosen as the 11th best book of all time. It was the only book from the 2000s to make the top 20.
