Younger Dryas impact hypothesis

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis is an idea that tries to explain a sudden cooling period on Earth about 12,900 years ago. This cooling period is called the Younger Dryas. The hypothesis suggests that a big event, like a comet hitting Earth, caused a lot of fresh water to flow into the ocean. This changed how the ocean moves and led to colder temperatures.

Most scientists do not support this idea. They have studied it for many years and found no strong evidence to back it up. Many experts in geology and other sciences have shown that the hypothesis does not fit with what we know about Earth. Some people still believe in this idea, even though it is not accepted by most scientists.

This hypothesis became well-known through TV shows and books. Some supporters think that scientists who disagree are hiding the truth. This makes the topic controversial for people who like stories about secret plots or ancient mysteries. A group called the Comet Research Group was formed to study this idea, but some of their research has been proven wrong.

The idea that a space rock hit North America long ago started in the 1800s with a writer named Ignatius Donnelly. He thought this might explain unusual dirt and rock patterns and even the end of a made-up ancient place called Atlantis.

The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis was suggested in 2007 by a scientist named Richard Firestone. He thought that a space rock hit Earth around 12,900 years ago, causing big changes to the climate and affecting animals and ancient people. Many scientists did not agree with this idea. They said there was no solid proof and that the evidence did not make sense.

Scientists have checked many of the claims made by those who support this idea and found problems. For example, they could not find special tiny stones that were supposed to prove the impact. Other scientists also said that the space rock would not have caused the big changes that Firestone and his team talked about. Even some of the people who first supported the idea later changed their minds or stopped talking about it.

Public interest

The idea of the Younger Dryas impact has been shown on TV shows from the National Geographic Channel, History Channel, and NOVA. In 2024, The New York Times called it "The Comet Strike Theory That Just Won't Die." Some people believe this idea, even though most scientists do not support it. This happens because people sometimes choose ideas that fit what they already think.

Author Graham Hancock wrote books saying a comet caused big changes long ago and linked it to old flood stories. Other experts said his ideas were not correct. His beliefs were shown in a Netflix series called Ancient Apocalypse. Some scientists said the series had ideas that were not based on real science. Different groups of people have different opinions about the series. The idea keeps getting attention because many people find it interesting, especially those who like stories about secret plans and not agreeing with experts.
