1985 Ice Hockey World Championships

The 1985 Ice Hockey World Championships took place in Prague, Czechoslovakia from April 17 to May 3. This was the 50th World Championships and the 61st European Championships of ice hockey. Eight teams competed, with each team playing every other team once. The top four teams then played each other again to decide the final rankings.

Czechoslovakia won the world championship for the sixth time, while the Soviet Union claimed their 23rd European title. It was a historic tournament for several reasons. The Soviet team played without their famous goaltender Tretiak for the first time since 1969. Canada had its best performance since returning to the championships in 1977 and even defeated the Soviet Union for the first time since 1961.

Surprisingly, Sweden did very poorly, having their worst finish since 1937. This tournament also marked the last appearance for East Germany at the top level. The event ended with some trouble during the bronze medal game between the US and the Soviet Union, which led to some coaches and players being suspended.
