Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
2 World Trade Center, also called 2 WTC or 200 Greenwich Street, is a new skyscraper being built in Manhattan, New York City. It is part of the rebuilt World Trade Center area. This building will replace the old 2 World Trade Center, which was finished in 1973 and destroyed during the September 11 attacks in 2001. The work on its foundation was done in 2013. In 2026, American Express said it would create and use a new headquarters tower there. Building will start that year and finish around 2031.

The original 2 World Trade Center, also called the South Tower, was finished in 1973. At that time, it was the second tallest building in the world, just a little shorter than its twin brother, 1 World Trade Center, the North Tower. The South Tower had lots of floors—110 in total—which was more than any building at that time.
On September 11, 2001, a plane crashed into the South Tower. The fires from the plane caused the building to fall down later that morning. This was part of a sad and serious event that affected many people.
New building
The new 2 World Trade Center will be a tall building being built to replace the old one that was destroyed. Plans for the building have changed many times over the years.
Originally, the building was planned to have many floors and offices, but work stopped because it was hard to find companies to rent the space. In 2026, a new plan was made for a shorter 55-story building that will be the global headquarters for American Express, opening in 2031.
In popular culture
The original design of the building was shown in some science fiction movies from the early 2010s, like Iron Sky and Oblivion. As plans for the new building changed, newer science fiction stories such as The Wandering Earth and Westworld showed a future New York that did not include 2 World Trade Center.
