Applied linguistics

The International Association of Applied Linguistics started in France in 1964. It's also called Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée or AILA. AILA has groups in more than thirty countries.

In Australia, applied linguistics focuses on teaching the native language and helping immigrants learn English. The Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) began in 1976 and holds yearly meetings with the group from New Zealand.

In Canada, the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics works in both English and French. They publish a journal and have yearly meetings.

The Irish Association for Applied Linguistics started in 1975 and publishes a journal named Teanga, which means "language" in Irish.

In Japan, the Japan Association of Applied Linguistics was created in 1982 and later joined AILA in 1984.

In New Zealand, the Applied Linguistics Association works with the Australian group and publishes its own journal.

The Southern African Applied Linguistics Association (SAALA) began in 1980 and has several publications.

In the United Kingdom, the British Association for Applied Linguistics was founded in 1967. They aim to support the study of language use and teaching, and they host many meetings each year.

In the United States, the American Association for Applied Linguistics started in 1977 and holds yearly conferences.
