Banco do Brasil S.A., known as the 'Bank of Brazil', is a very important Brazilian company that helps people and businesses with their money. It was started a long time ago, on October 12, 1808, by John VI, the King of Portugal, making it the oldest bank in Brazil and one of the oldest in the world that is still open today. The bank’s main office is in Brasília, the capital of Brazil.
Today, Banco do Brasil is the second biggest bank in Brazil and also in all of Latin America. The Brazilian government owns it, and people can buy pieces of the bank, called stocks, at the B3 stock market in São Paulo.
Since the year 2000, Banco do Brasil has been one of the most successful banks in Brazil, along with Itaú Unibanco, Banco Bradesco, and Banco Santander. It plays a big role in helping people with everyday banking, like saving and spending money, showing its strong place in retail banking.
History
Banco do Brasil was started in 1808 by Prince John, who later became King John VI of Portugal. He created the bank to help pay the kingdom's debts when he moved from Europe to Brazil. The bank acted as a regular bank, helped the government with money matters, and was the first to print Brazilian money.
Over time, the bank changed its roles. By 1964, many of its special jobs were taken over by the Central Bank of Brazil. In the 1990s, it was reorganized to focus more on regular banking services. Today, Banco do Brasil is a big and successful bank that helps support the Brazilian economy.
Branding
Banco do Brasil has used its current logo since the 1960s. The colors changed from brown and yellow to blue-grey and yellow, matching the colors of the Brazilian flag.
Since the early 1980s, the bank has supported many sports events, including beach soccer, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, futsal, sailing, motorsport, and beach volleyball. It sponsors top athletes like Robert Scheidt, Gustavo Kuerten, Enzo Fittipaldi, and Pietro Fittipaldi, as well as Brazil’s national beach soccer, volleyball, and futsal teams.
The bank also supports cultural events, such as plays, through its organization CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil), and amateur sports through the AABB (Associação Atlética Banco do Brasil). In 2012, famous supermodel Gisele Bündchen became the face of the bank’s first global advertising campaign.
In April 2023, Banco do Brasil raised US$750 million by issuing sustainability bonds. The money from these bonds will only be used for projects that help the environment and follow special rules for being eco-friendly.
