Basildon is a town in Essex, England. It is located 27 miles (43 km) east of Central London, 11 miles (18 km) south of Chelmsford, and 10 miles (16 km) west of Southend-on-Sea. The area also includes the towns of Billericay and Wickford, along with some rural areas.

Until the middle of the 20th century, Basildon was just a small village. In 1949, it was chosen to become a new town to help house people moving out of London. The new town grew to include the villages of Pitsea, Laindon, and Vange, as well as new homes, workplaces, and a town center. By the 2021 census, the town had a population of 115,955 people.

Basildon has three railway stations on the London, Tilbury and Southend line: Laindon, Basildon, and Pitsea. The town is located between the A127 road to the north and the A13 road to the south. Both of these roads are major routes connecting London to Southend.

History

Holy Cross Church

The name Basildon comes from Old English and means the hill of a person named Beorhtel. Over time, it changed from “Beorhtel’s dun” to Basildon. Records from 1086, called the Domesday Book, mention two estates in the area.

Basildon grew very little until the 1940s. In 1949, it was officially named a new town. Plans were made to build modern homes and neighborhoods. The first house was finished in 1951, and people began moving in. New shops and a train station were added later. Today, Basildon has grown into a busy town with many homes and places to visit.

Governance

Basildon is governed by two main local bodies: Basildon Borough Council and Essex County Council. Most of the town does not have its own smaller local council, but the northern part is part of the Noak Bridge area, which has its own local council.

In past elections, the town was often seen as a good way to understand what many people in the country were thinking. In 2026, there was a plan to skip some local elections because of changes coming to the local government setup. This caused some disagreement among leaders.

Administrative history

Basildon started as a small part of an older area called Laindon. It became its own area in 1866. Over time, it was part of different local groups. In 1949, Basildon was chosen to become a new town, and the local group was renamed Basildon in 1955. In 2010, Basildon was given special status, allowing the leader of the council to be called a mayor.
