British Virgin Islands at the 2014 Winter Olympics

The British Virgin Islands sent a delegation to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia from 7–23 February 2014. This was the second time the territory took part in the Winter Olympic Games, after appearing in the 1984 Winter Olympics.

The team had just one athlete, a freestyle skier named Peter Crook. He was the second person from the British Virgin Islands to ever compete in the Winter Olympics.

In the men's halfpipe event, Peter finished in 27th place. It was a special moment for the British Virgin Islands to see one of their own compete on the world's biggest stage.

Background

The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee was recognized by the International Olympic Committee on 31 December 1981. The British Virgin Islands joined Olympic competition at the 1984 Winter Olympics and have taken part in every Summer Olympic Games since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Before 2014, the British Virgin Islands had only appeared once in the Winter Olympics, back in Sarajevo in 1984.

In 2014, the British Virgin Islands sent one athlete, freestyle skier Peter Crook, to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Peter Crook was only the second person from the British Virgin Islands to ever compete in the Winter Olympics. Mark Chapman, a chartered accountant, was the leader of the team and served as the chef de mission. Peter Crook carried the flag for the British Virgin Islands during both the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony.

Freestyle skiing

The British Virgin Islands had one athlete, Peter Crook, who was 21 years old during the Sochi Olympics. On February 18, he took part in the qualifying round of the men's halfpipe event. Each skier got two runs, and the best run decided who moved on to the next stage. Peter scored 24.20 points in his first run and 25.20 points in his second run, but this placed him 27th overall, so he did not advance. The British Virgin Islands did not win any medals at these Games.
