City Council of Milan

The City Council of Milan (Italian: Consiglio Comunale di Milano) is the top tier legislative body of the municipality of Milan, Lombardy, Italy. It includes the directly elected mayor of Milan and an elected group of 48 members. Together, they watch over the mayor's decisions and can ask for the mayor to leave by a motion of no confidence.

The City Council is chosen by people to work for five years. Seats are given out proportionally to each group, with a majority bonus going to the group that wins, to help make sure things run smoothly. The most recent election happened on 3 and 4 October 2021.

The City Council meets at Palazzo Marino in Piazza della Scala, which is in Municipality 1.

Composition

The way Milan's government works changed in 1993. Before that, people elected the City Council, and the Council chose the mayor. Now, people vote directly for the mayor, and this choice also helps decide who joins the Council.

The mayor is elected first, and the person who wins usually has support from at least 62% of the Council members. The Council serves for five years, but if the mayor leaves office, new elections are held for both the mayor and the Council.

The City Committee, which helps run the city, is chosen by the mayor and includes some Council members and others from outside the Council.

Functions

The Council is the main decision-making group for the city of Milan. It decides on important plans, public projects, taxes, and rules for using city resources. It also handles financial reports and creates important city laws and rules.

After the creation of the Metropolitan City of Milan in 2015, some tasks related to local services like schools and parks were given to the nine administrative areas of Milan for advice and suggestions.

City Hall

The City Council of Milan meets at Palazzo Marino, a beautiful old palace from the 1500s. It is located in Piazza della Scala in the heart of Milan, Italy. Palazzo Marino has served as the city's main building since September 9, 1861. The palace was originally built for a trader named Tommaso Marino and later became owned by the government.

The main room where the Council meets was opened on June 30, 1953. On the walls of this room, there is an old inscription that reminds everyone to think of the people and not use force.
