City Council of Rome

A beautiful historic palace in Rome, Italy, known as the Palazzo dei Senatori.

The City Council of Rome, also called the Capitoline Assembly (Italian: Assemblea Capitolina; Romanesco: Assembrea Capitorina, Er Comune/Campidojo), is the main group that helps make rules for the city of Rome, Italy. It includes the mayor of Rome and 48 other elected members who work together to decide important matters for the city.

This council is chosen by people who live in Rome to serve for five years. They vote for their favorite candidate, and the person with the most votes gets to help lead the city. The council meets in a special building called Palazzo Senatorio, which is located in a beautiful square known as Piazza del Campidoglio.

The council not only makes rules but can also check on the mayor’s plans and even choose to remove them from office if needed, using something called a motion of no confidence. The way seats are shared among different groups is decided by a system called a majority bonus.

Composition

The way Rome's government works changed in 1993. Before that year, people elected council members who then chose the mayor. Now, citizens vote directly for the mayor and the council at the same time. This helps make sure the mayor has enough support from the council to lead well.

The mayor and council serve for five years, but if the mayor leaves office early, new elections are held. The mayor also chooses a group of helpers called the City Committee to work with them.
