Convention Muslim League
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Convention Muslim League (CML), also called Pakistan Muslim League - Convention, was a group that broke away from the Pakistan Muslim League in 1962. It supported the military leadership of General Ayub Khan, who was the President of Pakistan at that time.
There was another group called the Council Muslim League, which was the opposition party. In the 1965 presidential election in Pakistan, the CML used a rose as their symbol. The group was formed during a meeting in Karachi in September 1962, led by Nawab Muhammad Amin, who backed the new constitution created that year. Ch Khaliquzamman was chosen to organize the party.
The main goal of the CML was to support Ayub Khan's government. Even though the party was in power for seven years, it did not gain much popular support because it was mostly made up of wealthy and powerful people. After Ayub Khan left office on December 31, 1969, he passed control of the party to Fazal ul Qadir Chaudhary, who tried but failed to bring the party back to strength.
Formation
The Convention Muslim League was created in 1962 to support the leadership of General Muhammad Ayub Khan. Ayub Khan became the leader of Pakistan in 1959 and wanted to control the Pakistan Muslim League. He brought together leaders from different parties to form his new group and his rules for the country. Some members of the old party agreed with Ayub Khan and joined the new Convention Muslim League, while others did not. Ayub used this new party to show that he followed democratic ideas, even though he was in charge under martial law.
Ideology
Many people thought General Ayub Khan was liberal because he wore Western-style clothes and had policies that were not strictly based on Islamic law. However, the Convention Muslim League was formed by conservative Muslims who broke away from the larger Pakistan Muslim League. The party did not agree on whether to be conservative or liberal, but they focused mostly on supporting industrial growth and economic development during Ayub Khan’s time in office. By backing Ayub Khan, they also supported his leadership style, mainly because they liked his plans for improving the country’s economy and industries.
Manifesto
The Convention Muslim League had a list of ideas for how Pakistan should be run. They believed Pakistan should be an ideological state with an Islamic Board to guide laws based on Islamic teachings. They also wanted the central government to control only a few important areas like defense, foreign policy, transportation, exports, and currency.
The league planned to create a new province in the northern areas of East Pakistan and set up a naval headquarters there. They wanted to limit how much land people could own and have the government take control of 51 percent of banks and insurance companies. Farmers would receive loans, education would be free, and provinces would get jobs based on their population. Two new ministries for Islamic affairs and youth welfare were also proposed.
Presidents
The Convention Muslim League had three presidents during its time. They were:
- Chaudhry Khaliquzzaman (1962–1963)
- Ayub Khan (1963–1969)
- Fazlul Qadir Chaudhry (1969–1971)
