Cycling at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's cross-country

The women's cross-country mountain biking at the 2008 Summer Olympics happened on August 23, 2008, at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course. It was an exciting race where cyclists rode over hills and trails to finish as fast as they could.
From the start, Germany's Sabine Spitz led the race by a big margin, finishing with a gold medal in 1 hour, 45 minutes, and 11 seconds. Poland's Maja Włoszczowska came second, winning silver, and Russian rider Irina Kalentieva took the bronze after a close race with Canada's Catharine Pendrel.
Thirty cyclists from many countries started the race, but only eighteen finished the whole course. It was a tough but fun event that showed how strong and skilled these athletes were.
Competition format
The women's cross-country mountain biking race started at 10:00 am with all riders beginning together. They were placed based on their world rankings, with top-ranked riders closer to the front. The race had six laps on a 4.45 km course at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course, with each lap having 172 m of elevation change. The total distance riders covered was 26.70 km.
