History
Diageo was formed in 1997 by combining two companies: Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan plc. Shares in Diageo began trading on the London Stock Exchange on 17 December 1997. The name Diageo comes from a Latin word meaning "day" and a Greek root meaning "earth".
After forming, Diageo sold some of its non-drink businesses to focus on making alcoholic drinks. This included selling a food company and a fast-food restaurant chain. Diageo also bought many drink brands from different countries, such as a Canadian liquor company and a Brazilian spirit maker.
In 2009, Diageo closed a plant in Scotland, which made many people unhappy. In later years, Diageo sold some of its beer and wine brands and bought new ones, including a non-alcoholic spirits brand in 2024. In 2025, there was news about Diageo closing a whisky bottling plant in Canada, which caused some protests.
