The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is a special award given to someone who has done a lot for popular music during their life. It started in 2007 by the United States Library of Congress. The prize is named after the brothers George and Ira Gershwin. They were amazing at making popular songs and music, like "I Got Rhythm", "Embraceable You", and "Someone to Watch Over Me". They also made beautiful pieces such as Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, and even an opera called Porgy and Bess. This prize honors people who have made a big difference in the world of music, just like the Gershwin brothers did.

History

The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song was created in 2007 by a group of people who wanted to honor great musicians. The first award was given out that same year to recognize how popular music has positively shaped the world.

Each year, the Librarian of Congress chooses someone who has made a big difference in popular music. In 2007, Paul Simon was the first person to receive this award. Since then, many famous musicians like Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, and Billy Joel have been honored. Sometimes, the award is given to two people at once, like Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 2011, or Gloria and Emilio Estefan in 2019. The prize was not given in 2010, 2013, 2018, or 2021.
