Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall

Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall (born 9 July 1941) is a former Swedish modern pentathlete. He competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics. During those games, he and his teammates were found to have used alcohol, which led to the entire Swedish team being disqualified. This incident is remembered because it showed that even small rules can have big effects in sports.

Career

Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall was the first athlete to be disqualified at the Olympics for using a substance that was not allowed. This happened at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Liljenwall had a drink before an event to help himself feel better, but it led to his team having to give back their bronze medals.

Liljenwall also competed in the 1964 and 1972 Olympics. In 1964, he placed 11th individually and fourth with his team, and in 1972, he placed 25th and fifth, respectively.
