Haplogroup E-M132

Haplogroup E-M132, formerly called E-M33 (E1a), is a type of genetic marker found on the Y-chromosome in human males. This means it helps scientists study the ancestry and history of men by looking at their DNA. E-M132 is one of the two main branches that come from an older group called E-P147.

This haplogroup is split into two main sub-groups: E-M44 and E-Z958. These sub-groups have many smaller branches, which help researchers trace how groups of people moved and changed over time. By studying haplogroups like E-M132, scientists can learn about the past connections between different populations around the world.

Ancient DNA

Scientists have found evidence of E-M132/E1a in very old bones. One bone was from a person who lived on the Canary Islands and another from someone from El Hierro around the year 1000 CE.

They also found it in a person from the North Caucasus who lived long ago, between 900 and 700 BCE, and in someone from punic-era Spain.

Distribution

E-M132 Frequencies in select populations

E-M132 is most common in West Africa, especially in the country of Mali. Studies show that up to 34% of men in Mali carry this haplogroup. The Dogon people in Mali have even higher rates, with about 45.5% carrying E-M132, making it one of the most common groups there. It has also been found in around 15.6% of people in Guinea-Bissau.
