Haverstraw–Ossining Ferry
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Haverstraw–Ossining Ferry is a passenger ferry that crosses the Haverstraw Bay and Hudson River. It links the towns of Haverstraw and Ossining in New York. This ferry runs only on weekdays during rush hours, making it very helpful for people who commute to work.
The main purpose of the ferry is to carry commuters from the west side of the river to the Ossining Metro-North Railroad station. From there, they can catch Metro-North Railroad trains to Grand Central Terminal in New York City, or to other places like Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie along the Hudson Line.
The ferry service started in September 2000 and has been helping people travel easily across the river ever since. It is a valuable way for commuters to reach their trains quickly and get to where they need to go.
Docks
Haverstraw
The Haverstraw dock is south of the village of Haverstraw, next to a place called Harbors at Haverstraw. A bus service called Transport of Rockland stops there and also goes to the ferry dock. On weekends, this bus has a special trip to Nyack and the Palisades Center, matching the ferry times. Two other bus routes, numbers 91 and 95, stop about halfway a mile north of the dock.
In December 2024, a new ferry terminal opened in Haverstraw.
Ossining
The Ossining dock is in Henry Gourdine Park, west of the Ossining Metro-North station. From there, you can catch Hudson Line trains, and there are also buses from the Bee-Line Bus System that stop on the east side of the station.
Operation
The Weehawken, New Jersey–based NY Waterway ferry company has been running the ferry since September 5, 2000, under an agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. It runs only during morning and evening rush hours, going both ways during these times.
The fare is $4.50 for each person, but seniors and children aged 6 to 11 pay $2.25. Tickets can be bought at the ticket booth at the Haverstraw dock or paid in cash on the boat. The trip takes about 15 minutes. On May 10, 2024, it was announced that starting June 30, 2024, the cost of monthly tickets would be lowered, and ferry service would start running on weekends between 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Fleet
The ferry uses different boats, such as Peter R. Weiss, Brooklyn, and Christopher Columbus. Its main boat, the Admiral Richard E. Bennis, has been getting fixed up since August 2022. On January 15, 2009, the Admiral Richard E. Bennis helped get people off a plane that landed on the Hudson River between New Jersey and Midtown Manhattan. This happened because ice made it hard to run the ferry that day, so the boat was ready to help at NY Waterway’s storage place near Weehawken.
