An artistic 15th-century manuscript of 'The History of the Peloponnesian War' by Thucydides, beautifully decorated with intricate illuminations and elegant script.

The History of the Peloponnesian War is a detailed description of a big fight that happened a long time ago, between 431 and 404 BC. This war was between two groups of ancient Greek city-states. One group was the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta, and the other was the Delian League, led by Athens.

The book about this war was written by Thucydides, a man from Athens who was a leader in the war himself. Even though the book seems to have been left unfinished, ending suddenly in the middle of a sentence in 411 BC, it is still very important today. Many people think it is one of the first real history books ever written.

Some scholars, like J. B. Bury, believe that Thucydides wrote the book in a very fair and careful way, like a scientist looking at facts. Others, like W. R. Connor, think the book is more like a story, where Thucydides chose and arranged the events to make them more interesting and meaningful. Either way, the History of the Peloponnesian War remains a classic and very studied work about ancient times.

Historical method

P. Oxy. 16, fragment of a 1st-century manuscript

Thucydides is one of the most important people in the history of Western history. His way of writing about events has been studied a lot. He recorded events by year, splitting each year into a busy summer and a quieter winter. He also included many speeches from leaders on both sides, like talks before battles and political debates. One famous speech is the funeral oration of Pericles, found in Book Two.

Thucydides tried to write fairly about both sides in the war, even though he was from Athens and fought in the war. Some scholars think he might have favored Athens, but overall, he aimed to write something that would last forever. He did not include the gods in his stories, unlike other writers of the time, and instead focused on human actions. However, he did use stories from old poets like Homer to help understand past events, while also pointing out that these stories might not always be completely true.

Subject matter of the History

The first book of the History looks at early Greek history and tries to explain why the Peloponnesian War started and what caused it. The rest of the book, from books 2 through 8, mainly talks about the Peloponnesian War and doesn’t go into other topics much.

The History focuses on the military side of the war but also talks about how war can change society and culture. It shows how people sometimes did bad things to each other during the war. Some parts, like the Melian dialogue, talk about strong powers making decisions based on what benefits them, not just what is fair. The book also looks at how power and fairness mix in politics and war, showing both sides of this idea.

The History talks a lot about how military technology changed. It describes new ways of doing things in sieges and naval battles. It says that having a strong navy is very important for any modern empire. A big part of this is the trireme, a special ship that was very important for many years.

The book says that the main reason for the Peloponnesian War was that Athens grew very powerful, and this made Sparta worried. It talks about how Athens became powerful from 479 BC to 432 BC. Athens defends its power by saying it wasn’t taken by force and that anyone in their place would do the same. The Spartans were more careful and less eager to grow their power. One big mistake Athens made was a big mission in Sicily, which nearly destroyed them.

Thucydides also talks about how earthquakes and waves in the sea are connected, describing an event in 426 BC for the first time in history.

Some difficulties of interpretation

Thucydides' book about the war is very hard to understand. His writing style is complex, and scholars often disagree about what he meant.

Many believe Thucydides was still working on his book when he passed away, as it stops suddenly and does not cover the entire war. There is also uncertainty about whether he planned to change parts he had already written. Some passages seem to contradict each other, leading some scholars to think he wrote them at different times with changing views. This debate about the different layers of writing has been going on for a long time, with many experts finding it difficult to resolve.
