Hupehsuchia

Hupehsuchia is a group of ancient reptiles that lived a very long time ago, during a time called the Early Triassic. These creatures are closely related to another group of ancient sea animals called ichthyosaurs. Hupehsuchia lived only for a short time, just a few million years, during a specific part of the Early Triassic known as the Olenekian age.
The name Hupehsuchia comes from a place called Hubei Province in China, where many fossils of these reptiles have been found. Scientists think that Hupehsuchia might be part of a larger group of animals known as Ichthyosauromorpha, which includes several types of ancient sea reptiles. These animals are interesting to scientists because they help us understand how life in the oceans changed after a big event that happened long ago.
Description
Hupehsuchians had a special body shape that looked like a smooth, long tube, with a long tail and big, paddle-like limbs. Their skulls were long, and their jaws did not have teeth.
One interesting part of their body was the neck, which was longer than usual. They also had special bones along their back that were split into two parts. On top of these bones were hard plates that might have helped protect their skin. Some hupehsuchians also had special bones along their belly, forming a kind of armor.
Genera
Only five named groups of hupehsuchians are known. All of them were found in the Jialingjiang Formation in Hubei Province, China. Scientists first thought the rocks where they were found were from a later time, but now they believe they are from a slightly earlier time in the Early Triassic.
The first hupehsuchian to be described was called Nanchangosaurus, and it was named in 1959. Another group, Hupehsuchus, was named in 1972. These two groups looked quite similar, but Nanchangosaurus was smaller. A third group, Parahupehsuchus, was named in 2014 and had a longer body. A fourth group, Eohupehsuchus, also named in 2014, had a shorter neck.
In 2003, scientists found a new specimen called SSTM 5025. It had more fingers and toes than usual, a feature also seen in some other ancient creatures. Later, in 2019, this specimen was described as belonging to Nanchangosaurus.
Taxonomy and phylogenetics
Hupehsuchia was first described in 1972 as a group of early reptiles called "Thecodontia". Scientists thought it was related to other reptiles from the same time, but later studies showed it was different.
Hupehsuchians look similar to ichthyosaurs, with bodies shaped like fish and long tails. They share some features with ichthyosaurs, such as a certain bone structure in their skulls. However, they also have unique traits, like flat surfaces on their vertebrae.
Because hupehsuchians lived in the ocean and evolved special features for swimming, it's hard to know exactly where they fit among other reptiles. Scientists continue to study them to learn more about their place in the family tree of ancient animals.
Paleobiology
Hupehsuchians were well suited for life in the ocean. They had paddle-like limbs and bodies shaped like a fish. Their long back bones likely helped them move smoothly through the water.
They may have used their flat fronts to sweep through water, possibly with special structures like some modern sea animals. Their long necks suggest they moved slowly while feeding.
The purpose of their bony back plates is still a mystery. These plates, along with other bony parts, helped them stay balanced in the water. They were among the biggest sea creatures of their time, so the plates probably were not for protection. Instead, they might have helped keep their bodies steady while moving.
Because of their body shape, hupehsuchians likely could not move well on land. They probably gave birth to live babies in the ocean, similar to some other sea reptiles.
