ibml started as a document scanning company on August 1, 1992, founded by Gary Murphy. It has since become a business focused on information capture, making and supporting fast document capture scanners and software. One of its important products, the ImageTrac scanner, was first used by Australian Airlines to read ticket numbers and capture ticket images.

Over the years, ibml introduced many new products. In 1997, they released SoftTrac software to manage the ImageTrac scanners. New versions of the ImageTrac scanners were launched in 2000, 2003, and later years. In 2009, these scanners were chosen for the 2010 United States census. More recent products include the ImageTrac Series 5000, SoftTrac Capture Suite, and the high-speed ibmlFUSiON™ scanner.
